Donna Arceneaux, Former NTGTS Intern

“During my internship with NTGTS, I was provided with many opportunities to meet industry leaders, learn about key players and new developments, and network with many similarly-minded people.  I applied my experience while working as a contractor for Verizon and SBC (now AT&T), and continue to rely upon the things I learned during my internship in my current position as a consultant with Oliver Wyman.

APRIL 2009 MONTHLY NETWORKING EVENT: THE POWER OF UNIFIED COMMUNICATIONS

On April 23, 2009, NTGTS held its monthly meeting at the University of Texas at Dallas.  John Alexander, Director - IPCBU Architecture of Cisco Systems, Inc., spoke about "The Power of Unified Communications."  Mr. Alexander explained how Unified Communications can improve connectivity and productivity for companies, customers and individuals.  In addition, Mr. Alexander provided specific examples of Unified Communications that are available today and what will be available in the future.  Following the presentation, Mr. Alexander answered questions from the audience of more than 45 individuals, UTD faculty and UTD students.

The success of the event was due in large part to the cooperative efforts of the UTD, specifically Dr. Fumagalli and Dr. Alexander, NTGTS Corporate Sponsor Fusion Solutions, specifically Vic Velevis, and the NTGTS leadership.  NTGTS would again like to thank the sponsors of the event:  University of Texas at Dallas for the meeting facility, Fusion Solutions for the food, and  Chalker Flores, LLP for the refreshments and speaker's gift.

LEADER SPOTLIGHT, Q&A WITH LARRY PEREIRA, SECRETARY, NTGTS/CTC

How did you get started in the telecoms and high tech industry?

During my senior year, I got a Co-op/internship at Nortel Networks in Richardson, TX.  It was the best job I ever had because it challenged me and I loved the concepts of telephony.  Up until then, I had no formal exposure to telephony.  My learning curve was very high and I started taking-on full-time responsibilities while being a Co-op.  When I was ready for a full-time job, Nortel made me a job offer that I could not refuse.  I loved working at Nortel and enjoyed a very successful career track, which was the beginning of my Telecom/Technology career.

What advice do you have for others who are new to these fields?

The transformation of the telecom sector is past the “Data” buzz and has now embraced the ulti-media platform on both fronts – landline and mobility.  In order to be successful in the telecom sector, one has to be willing to think outside the comfort zone.  Instead of spending most of one’s time in thinking of new “Killer Apps”, one should get creative on taking existing Killer Apps and transforming them into what I like to call “Dollar Apps”.  Examples of few “Dollar Apps” are the use of iTunes on the iPhone (not just the iPod), along with all the other Apps that are now available for the iPhone and 1000s being created every year.

So my bottom line advice regarding these “new” fields is NOT to get comfortable with any one thought process for too long.  Most likely it will change on you BEFORE you buy your next pair of shoes – and I mean that…  The question then is – are you always ready for the change or are you always playing catch-up with the change?

What is your biggest challenge?

Staying up with the over-all transformation in the technology world is like learning English, German, Chinese, and Latin, ALL at the same time.  An even bigger challenge nested within my example of languages is how many individuals do you know who can converse with you in Latin?  However, nevertheless, you have to learn it and learn it well in order to stay in front of the ever-changing technology world.

How do you balance work and life?

Aha!  That is the million dollar question.  There is always a fine line between work and play.  At this stage of my life, my two little boys dictate that fine line, along with my iPhone.  I am always in touch.  However, I have control over whom, when, and how long I will stay in touch with at any given time.  It’s a fine balance that cannot be explained and is different for everyone.

Please describe an average day in your life.

When I am not traveling, I drop off my seven year old son to school, followed by conference calls with clients most of the day.  Then I do catch-up work from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m.  Afterwards, dinner with family followed with playtime with my two boys.  After they go to bed, I read Walt’s Blog at Control Magazine, and then finish up work, or do research, or develop a new proposal, or attend volunteer activity meetings – such as church, non-profit, civic, NTGTS, etc.  I also try to play various sports 3-4 times a week for a couple of hours per day.

Value of NTGTS Membership.

NTGTS is an incredible organization.  It is structured in a way that one can get what one is willing to put into it.  Over the past eight years that I have been part of NTGTS, on a personal front, I have made friendships that I will treasure forever.  On a professional front, I have learned more than I could imagine just by attending the monthly program meetings.  I have also personally witnessed members find new leads for jobs or for new business.  For all of these reasons, NTGTS is an ideal venue for this ever-changing technology world we live in.

What I do.

While I have not completely stepped out of the Telecom (I mean Multi Media) domain, I have now developed new skill sets in the sector of Automation Process and Control.  It plays more into the IT domain.  This sector is currently developing new wireless standards for automation instrumentation, mostly for sensors.  Lots of the principals that were used by the telecommunications industry have been borrowed by these new standards.  I am part of the standards committee, monitoring the new standards that are currently being developed by global companies.

Technology I cannot live without.

Must you ask?  It is the iPhone of course – must have it!!!  If one uses it correctly (i.e. finding balance), it can really make life easier.

Technology I can live without.

DSL.  It is too slow…

Bring on the FiOS…!!!

Favorite Restaurant anywhere in the world.

The Hawker Stands at the beach in Singapore, eating chili crabs and pepper crabs while drinking FRESH coconut juice or Tiger Beer – Yum!!!  If you have been to Singapore and haven’t eaten at the Hawker Stands that are located right on the beach, you have missed out.

We will continue to profile other leaders of the organization as well as members.  If you are interested in being profiled in future editions, please contact membership@ntgts.org.

RECAP OF THE MARCH 2009 NETWORKING EVENT

This networking event was a great business follow-up to the February 26th event on VoIP Security presented by Dr. Ram Dantu, Assistant Professor and Director, Center for Information and Computer Security, University of North Texas, who had an academic discussion on the subject.  The March 19th networking event was held at the University of Dallas, Frisco,TX campus. The program's featured speaker was Andy Asava, Vice President of Worldwide Sales at Sipera Systems, who spoke about VoIP and video security threats.  Mr. Asava highlighted that Enterprises want to securely extend their enterprise’s voice and video communications to any broadband Internet connect point, and today there are security issues on VOIP that enterprises are not aware of that can cause major concerns through their phone device as a data connection. The event had several companies in attendance such as:  Paranet, Abovenet, ITT, as well as others.

If you want to be a program speaker, suggest a topic or sponsor one of our programs, contact us at programs@ntgts.org.
